Sign up to our special workshop on Internet safety and dealing with scams.

A fun, social, relaxed and informative workshop led by our founder and Internet expert Kennedy. Hands-on exercise and videos will be used to bring the subject to life and reinforce learning. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussions. Share your experience and make some new friends over a cuppa and some biscuits.

You are welcome to bring your own devices, but it is optional.

What happens in a computer scam

Here is a nice video from Jim Browning.

Scenario: Jim saw a warning on his computer screen. It told him to call Microsoft Technical support for help with the number provided. He made the call and the support agent (scammer) asked Jim to give him permission to connect to his computer remotely. This was what happened next. (source: Youtube. Blocking scam telephone calls

Use a telephone with Nuisance Call Blocker e.g. BT4600
Blacklist the last caller number e.g:
- BT Call Protect / Plusnet Call Protect: dial 1572
- TalkTalk CallSafe: dial 1472
- Sky Talk Shield: dial 1783

What should you do if you got scammed?

Here are some suggestions:

Stay calm
If someone is in immediate danger or risk of harm dial 999 now.
Note down what happened
- Based on when, where, who, what, how (e.g. the phone number / website)
If bank account or credit card was involved, inform your bank immediately e.g.
- Cancel the affected debit or credit cards and reissue new ones
- Temporary block your online banking account
Contact a trusted IT professional to check your IT equipment e.g.
- Unlock the computer if needed
- Collect evidence
- Clean up any nasties or something that enables them to get into your computer again
- Reset/change passwords
Contact ActionFraud (the Police) to report the scam with the information and the evidence collected.
